Argentinian Director Agostina Guala

1. Introduce yourself

My name is Agostina Guala, I’m from Argentina but I’ve been living in London for the last 2 years.  In Argentina, I worked in many films mostly as Second Assistant but as First ad as well. I directed several short films and a tv jazz program.

2. What is your job title?

I define myself as Cinema Director and Second Assistant Director.

3. Who looks after the kids when you're working?

Well, I still haven’t gone back to work, my babe is 7 months old. The idea is to get a nanny and manage with my partner (who is a First AD) to get both of us some working time until he goes to school (in 2 years). At the moment it is me taking care of him full time.

4. How long did you take off after having your baby?

Still on it. My situation is a bit particular because I could never work in the film industry here, I got pregnant too fast. However, I’ve been writing a lot (if that counts) and I am directing at the moment for a German company.  Its a project about the Covid-19. I’m the London nutshell story.

5. Would you say you have a good work/life balance?

Not at the moment.

6. Are you job sharing or working flexibly? Or would you consider it as an option?

Yes, I would like to get a part-time job.

7. What do you think is the hardest part of being a female working in media/film/tv industry and being a parent?

The idea of being far from the kids for so long. Not to be able to be a present parent.

8. What are your tips for any other women out there wanting to have kids and keep a career in film?

Not sure but I think is possible to keep the job and being a mum. The ideal will be to work fewer hours per day or having at least one day a week working from home. But would be great to feel supported on these type of choices. Most of the time the industry makes you feel you don’t deserve to have a life or that it is wrong.

9.     Any advice for anyone about to return to work after maternity?

I would actually like to get some advice!

10.  What advice did you wish someone had given you?

Well, I just want to feel that it is possible, that it’s not just about giving all my time to the job.
